Class 1 went back in time to discover what life in a Victorian classroom might be like.

Schools were very different to how they are now. We started off our day by lining up outside the classroom as quietly as possible with boys in front of girls. We were only allowed to go into the classroom once the teacher had told us we were able to and even then we weren’t able to sit down!

Children were to ‘be seen and not heard’; a motto the Victorian’s lived by. If any of us called out or did the wrong thing such as give an incorrect answer, we could be punished by being made to stand in the corner of the classroom with the Dunce’s Hat on. During the Victorian’s era, sometimes children would be made to stand in the corner for an entire lesson!

We had lessons including handwriting, using chalks and quills. Spelling, times tables and Physical Education which involved going outside a cold day, standing in a line and following the actions of the teacher!

One lesson of the morning included a lesson about the humble potato and it’s importance in our everyday lives!

Our final lessons of the morning were separate lessons for girls and boys. The girls learnt the important life skill of needlework whilst the boys were schooled in the art of “technical drawing” which would help them during their search for work once they had left school.

Despite it being a day of seriousness we didn’t mind too much and had some fun too!

Visiting the Bridge
We have all been very curious about what the workmen have been doing to the bridge on School Lane! So when Tim ‘The Bridge’ Lewis from Kier Construction arranged for us to have our very own viewing platform to see what was going on, we couldn’t wait to go and try it out.

Whilst we were there, the workmen were busy sorting out a wire drill to begin cutting through the concrete. Tim explain that they had created a special walk way over the edge of the bridge so that the workmen could easily access the bits they needed to cut.

Thank you to Tim for telling us all about the work on the bridge!
